Council Minutes 3.29.17

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously, that you might as well not have lived at all; in which case, you’ve failed by default.” -J.K. Rowling

    1. Approval of Minutes
    2. Reports
      • Mod: Glad to have members of the Lebanon High School Council here. There has been an invitation from Circle-Up for Council members to come to a discussion and lunch during 5th period on Thursday April 6th at the Howe Library on the mental health of teens.
      • Treasurer: Co-curricular: $5,013.03, Council Fund: $5,753.29
      • Secretary: Freshmen, Sophomore, and Staff Alternates can vote
      • DSB: The board discussed maximum capacity for facilities use at the schools. There was an explanation of Athletics Over Break and the current wording of the Service Requirement. Dr. Bass thinks there is possibility that he can get Chief Justice John Roberts to come to a Council meeting in late May.
      • Admin: Presentation of the Skip Bean Democratic Citizen Award to Molly Young, Shira Hoffer, Amy Good, and Jasper Meyer,
      • Curric: Curriculum Survey Presentation
      • OEC: Handbook revisions coming at the next Council meeting
      • SL: Pretty much set on the field trip but if you are interested in coming we can try to fit you in. Hoping to bring a presentation about the new Council space in a few weeks
      • SAC: Hoping to have club budgets ready by May
      • Observances: New community member on the committee who is a lawyer so we have a legal perspective and we are looking forward to a presentation at a staff meeting
      • Service: Presentation to the staff this afternoon
    3. Rainbow Alliance Money Allocation ($300)

“I move to allocate $300 from the Co Curricular fund to the Rainbow Alliance club.”

      • Hosting a community Inter-GAY-lactic Prom and we have raised $300 but need $212 for Police Officer, $200 for rental space, $100 for food, and $30 for decorations. Food and decorations will be handmade
      • Motion Passes
    • Exec J-Com Duties Part 2 Bylaw Notification
    • Tom Hanlon Nominations
    • Community Service Graduation Requirement Motion
      • Lebanon Council passed a very similar motion but it was stopped in the Administration after debate
      • “I move to amend point 1 under the “Community Service Section” to read ‘Each student is required to participate in at least 10 hours of community service each full year of HHS attendance.”’
        • Amendment Passes
      • Concerns from Guidance about what will be required from them for implementation
      • Problem with YIA getting funding to support the additional hours they will be supporting
      • YIA has the capacity to do well over 1,000 now and if students are initiating their own projects we can be a conduit
      • There should be wording explaining the process of getting service sanctioned by YIA because right now it isn’t clear
      • This motion doesn’t give much responsibility to guidance so it shouldn’t be more additional work then just speaking to the noncompliant students because the Service Ad Hoc would be compiling the hours and the list of those students
      • “I move to amend the motion under point 3, subpoint a to read “Any service organized or sanctioned by Youth In Action”’
        • Attempting to clarify that hours can be sanctions by YIA
        • Amendment Passes
      • It is an easy way to involve YIA but they are an organization that is not affiliated with Hanover High School for a graduation requirement presents sustainability concerns
    • Meeting Adjourns
