Freshman Open Campus
(“I move that eligibility for open campus be changed to include second-semester freshmen.”)
Similar opinions from previous week were stated
They would be less likely to abuse the privilege than many seniors
Because of pushback, we should compromise to 4th quarter instead of 2nd semester
The fact that it keeps coming up is telling in itself, we should at least do a trial period because if we never do one, the issue will continue to come up
Freshmen don’t necessarily like hanging out in the cafe
The cafe and common ground don’t “foster” the bonds like the school thinks they do
It’s important to make sure that freshmen can get involved with clubs
The discussion this year is very different, it can happen this year
Better to have second semester than none at all
A lot of the “bonding” for freshmen will happen by the 4th quarter
Upperclassmen are bitter because they didn’t have it freshman year
It is a privilege. But so is using chairs. What if the freshmen couldn’t use chairs?
It wouldn’t make much of a difference if we moved it by one semester
Many upperclassmen abuse the privilege when freshmen are less likely to do so
Nobody has time to go off-campus anyway
Parents are worried about off-campus and don’t imagine “a nice leisurely walk to the coop,” they imagine drugs and sex and driving as fast as you can to McDonald’s
There’s not much stopping freshmen from going off-campus now. They can sneak out the back door and go to Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts
4th quarter open campus would be a good transition/test period
“I move to refer this motion to OEC”
Summary of discussion:
We are starting to hear the same thing over and over again
We could easily discuss this for a few more months
OEC can do specific wording (4th quarter, trial period)
People have made up their minds already, we should vote now
