Athletics Over Break
“I move that the school adopt a policy to limit athletic practices and games (optional and non-optional) during school vacations. School sports will allow for two consecutive days of no scheduled practices or games during Thanksgiving and February break, and three consecutive days during Holiday and April break.”
Amendment: I move to change the motion to read “I move that the school adopt a policy to limit athletic practices and games during school vacations. School sports will allow for two consecutive days of completely optional practices or games during Thanksgiving and February break, and three consecutive days during Holiday and April break. Coaches would communicate with athletes and parents at the start of the season which of those days are optional.”
Addresses the shadow culture around sports
Amendment would be good to pass as an incremental change and then next year Council could come back and pass stronger wording if we find this motion is to weak but until then it was a good compromise
This amendment allows athletes who want to practice to do so
Amendment: I move to change the amendment to read: “I move to change the motion to read ‘I move that the school adopt a policy to limit athletic practices and games during school vacations. School sports will allow for at least two consecutive days of optional practices or games during Thanksgiving and February break, and at least three consecutive days during Holiday and April break. Coaches would communicate with athletes and parents at the start of the season which of those days are optional.’”
Amendment passes
Theatre takes a “dark day” for rest. HHS isn’t the NHL.
Sundays must be a day off for sports because some sports had too many practices
Concerned with the responses from coaches, because they painted the athletes as victims of this motion when this motion is trying to help them
Athletics are co-curricular
National teams have forced rest days, students need to be able to rest
Coaches have a better feel for their team than anybody else, they should be responsible for scheduling practices as needed during the season
Amendment: I move to amend the motion to read: “I move to change the motion to read ‘I move that the school adopt a policy to limit athletic practices and games during school vacations. School sports will allow for at least two consecutive days of optional practices or games during Thanksgiving and February break, and at least three consecutive days during Holiday and April break. Coaches would communicate with athletes and parents at the start of the season which of those days are optional. Coaches are encouraged not to hold practices during these optional days.”
Encourage is too strong a word
Moves it back to a more neutral position
Shows coaches that we want to give students a break
Coaches won’t hear the “encouragement”
