Community Service Graduation Requirement Motion
To make it accessible when implemented we should start service groups to make it easier and include a curricular component
Based on concerns about ten hours a compromise might be to allow people to log up to twenty hours in a year towards a forty hour total
We should have a cultural shift so we don’t devalue service
Students will receive long term value from a service requirement that will outweigh initial discomfort
It’s easy to say we want a culture shift but that doesn’t just happen and Council has discussed two other motions that sought to initiate a culture shift and could not find a way to do and the requirement seems to be the best option to expose people to service
Devoting a day to service would show we value it as a school and it would provide education related to service and common ground could be a great forum for doing that and it would be close to the same service while bonding with classmates
Everyone has an obligation to give back to the community and this motion echoes that
We need to make community service a school value and after implementation we will be able to work towards a cultural shift but this is just the first step
Service can be such a diverse and individual experience and it is important to figure out what you can do for the community so it should be an individual requirement
We should emphasize that it can come from what you want to do and YIA sponsored activities can come after
There needs to be support for students, especially those who don’t drive, who have parents that work
You don’t have to travel for community service, you can just being help out your neighbors
Some students live in very isolated locations or work more than a high schooler should and they don’t have the ability to complete this requirement without support from the school
As a school we have become more entitled and lost some of our respect
We can never have a perfect motion but we can work though flaws that come up and revise policy
Everyone has some time they use every week that could be dedicated to service
